Vinegar consists mainly of acetic acid, which gives its acidity and water, which gives its liquid form. Its acidity is weak since its precursor acetic acid, which has a formula of CH3COOH or HC2H3O2, is an organic acid (carboxylic acid) and is classified as a weak acid. Because of this, it is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to have a minimum of 5% acidity before it is being commercially available.
Vinegar has numerous applications such as for cooking, agricultural and holicultural uses, household cleaning and most importantly for medical purposes. It comes from a wide range of varieties namely: apple cider vinegar which is used as a home remedy for illnesses like sinus infection, allergy, viral infections and high blood pressure; malt vinegar which is one of the properties of beer; wine vinegar which, as the name implies, is commonly used for red or white wine; balsamic vinegar which is made from grape products that have never been permitted to ferment to wine and is used for meal dressings and gourmet sauce; vinegars from fruit wines are said to have antioxidant properties which have a positive effect on reducing the harm brought by high-fat foods so it may help in losing weight; rice vinegar which is very popular in pairing Asian dishes as it helps in the digestion of food; coconut vinegar which is made from fermented coconut water and is a major cooking partner in the Philippine cuisine and in fact it is almost always used as a sauce or beverage; and others are made from date, honey and other fruits. Basically, variations of vinegars vary from each country.
Furthermore, vinegar was thought to be of dramatic help in alleviating body ailments. In fact, there has no ailment that it cannot be of use especially when talking about traditional medicine. But this theory has never been made a fact due to the lack of study that may support its claims. But nonetheless, vinegar for health as effective in helping the body cure has a strong basis. Since it is high in acetic acid, it can increase the body’s capability to absorb essential elements like minerals from the food that we eat. It is also beneficial in increasing our calcium absorption especially in pregnant women who need more calcium than the usual diet. As opposed to dairy products which are known to be a good source of calcium, vinegar in the diet can give less gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea and cramping which are very frequent outcomes of dairy product consumption.
Thus, we can conclude that vinegar, since it is easily produce anywhere in the globe, is a natural healing supplement and indeed vinegar has many health benefits.
